What is the Annual Election Period (AEP – Open Enrollment)?

October 15th – December 7th is the annual Medicare open enrollment when Medicare eligible individuals with Part A and B coverage may add, change, or drop a Medicare Advantage and/or a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan.  Enrollment changes take effect on January 1 of the new year.  Medicare Supplement policy holders are not limited by the AEP, in terms of  enrolling, dropping, or changing coverage, as all Medicare Supplement plans allow continuous enrollment/dis-enrollment throughout the year.  The benefit period for all Medicare plans resets on the first of each calendar year (deductibles and out of pocket maximums reset to zero).  Plans can also change their premiums with the new year, and the new rates will are announced in the first week of October.
